living without refrigeration

I am plant based, high in fresh foods, with a starch base (Dr. John McDougall).

I stay mostly on BLM land where there's a 14 day stay limit. I plan around that. Romain, tomatoes, cucumber, and avocado are good for 2-5 days at room temperatures. Of course pit fruits have their own schedule and I eat them when they are ripe. Oranges, tangerines, apples, melons and watermelon last for up to 2 weeks sometimes longer.

My main meals revolve around potatoes and cabbage (long shelf life). I'm currently experimenting with Harmony House dehydrated vegetables and soup mixes. Plus various rices, pinto beans, split peas, lentils, and pasta. I have been doing quite well during the novel coronavirus stay-at-home period.

I have enough solar that I cook mostly in the electric pressure cooker (3 quart Instant Pot).

I drink water with an occasional soda, my current weakness, no coffee, tea, or alcohol beverages of any kind. So no refrigeration needed here either.

This past winter, mid December through mid April I stayed in the LTVA (long term visitors area) next to Quartzsite, Arizona. So I was able to go to town whenever I needed/wanted.

    1. I am quite pleased with the dehydrated vegetables. My favorite meal is
      INSTANT GARLIC MASHED POTATOES

SERVES: 2-4 as a side (or 1 meal if you are me)
      PREP: 4 mins
      COOKING: 24 mins
READY IN: 30 mins - times are for the pressure cooker preparation method

Adapted from: my crooked little mind

      INGREDIENTS
4 cups water (for soup) try 2¾ c for mashed

1/4 cup dehydrated vegetable soup mix, my favorite (today) Frontier CO-OP available on Amazon
1½ teaspoons McCormick Salt Free Garlic & Herb Seasoning (still looking for a roasted garlic product)
1¼ cups instant potato flakes (5 — ¼ cup measures because it fits inside my storage container)
10 twists fresh ground black pepper
optional 1 tablespoon Everything "But" The Bagel Seasoning and Tobasco brand Chipotle Pepper Sauce to taste

      {2020-09-01 — fresh potatoes 500g with 2¾ cups water}

      DIRECTIONS
Boil water and veggies in a medium saucepan then low simmer for 15-25 minutes (or just let them soak for a couple of hours)

Meanwhile, mix potato flakes and garlic mix.
      Bring
Add potato flakes to boiling water. Let sit covered for 4 minutes.

Pressure cooker: Cook water and veggie mix at high pressure for 6 minutes with 10 minute natural release.
Add potato flakes mix to the veggies and let sit covered for 4 minutes. Serve.

      NOTES
I add pepper, Everything "But" The Bagel Seasoning mix, and Tobasco Chipotle Sauce to my liking.

    1. Is that a different blog? I'm having trouble figuring out how this website works.

    2. I was not as organized as I wanted to be. On top of that I should post more.

These are different blogs, the Eating w/o a SO is at http://ewoaso.blogspot.com/

On top of all of this is my progression of eating. I am now trying to eat all raw vegetables and fruits.

I will do my best to answer your questions.

    3. I did 90% raw vegan the year I took myself off all my doctor medications. Fourteen prescriptions. It was actually almost two years before I (purely by the grace of God) got done with the last of them.

I wish I'd not discontinued eating that way.

At the time I had been figuring it out by the seat of my pants, trying to avoid everything I'd ever heard was bad for me. It's a wonder I didn't hurt myself.
I had gone from way overweight to almost underweight. Back then I didn't know about healthy vs unhealthy fats.

I want to go back to eating raw vegan.

What is it about losing a hard-won good habit that makes getting it back again so difficult?

    4. I am doing Hyper Nourish by Dr. Brooke Goldner here is an explanation https://youtu.be/p7ekiAhCPJQ
And here's where to join, it's free. http://www.smoothieshred.com/
It is so positive, always talking about how, not dwelling on what you can't do. Do the smoothies eventually your desire for the bad stuff gets pushed to the side.

    5. I didn't grow up with eating vegetables to speak of...canned corn, peas and green beans. During my year of eating raw vegan the only way I could get them in me was green smoothies. I wasn't going for taste. I needed to recover health. Those smoothies were medicine and I didn't care what they tasted like!

I'll check out the website. Thanks.

    1. It has to help.

I brought up the video to watch. Does the nourishing include a focus on supporting detox? Milk thistle, chlorella, and such? I think I learned the hard way how important that is.

    2. I don't remember there being added supplements. Just kale/power greens/carnivorous vegetables and ½ cup chia, flax, or a combination.

    3. The greens are naturally detoxifying.
