NEVADA Real ID driver license
December 4, 2019

As seen on the CheapRVLiving YouTube channel. [link] How I changed my domicile to Nevada without paying $300, or more, for rent. I chose Nevada because they don't have a state income tax.

Real ID

Nevada now makes no distinction between Real ID and non-Real ID license requirements. So it only makes sense to go ahead with Real ID.

I wanted to accomplish 5 things

  1. Establish domicile in the income-tax-free state of Nevada.
  2. Not pay for a month's stay in an RV park to meet the residency requirements.
  3. Get a Real ID driver's license.
  4. Make the shortest incursion into Nevada as possible.
  5. Avoid the smog check requirement of the greater Las Vegas and Reno areas.

No cost to establish residence

"Nevada Revised Statutes 482.103 and 483.141 "Resident" defined.
"Resident" includes, but is not limited to, a person:  …
Who declares himself to be a resident of this state to obtain privileges not ordinarily extended to nonresidents of this state." (https://dmv.nv.gov/newresident.htm
You will be declaring yourself a resident with the help of Colorado River Food Bank. Every how-to on establishing residence to satisfy the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has included a provision of a rent receipt for 30 days.
Remembering a successful case where the ACLU sued the State of California to secure voting rights for a homeless person, it was reasonable to assume that driving privileges could not be withheld for those without a physical residence.
Searching the Nevada DMV website revealed the Relief Agency or Shelter Certification (DMV 115).
This form is acceptable for one of your two documents to assert that you are a resident of Nevada. The following is from the DMV-115 form.
"Relief Agency or Shelter Certification
This certification is used to support a claim that you are a Nevada resident. You must be a resident of Nevada to be eligible for a driver’s license, driver authorization card (DAC) or identification card (NRS 483.250 (7), 483.290 (5)(b), and 483.934). The definition of “resident” is found in NRS 483.141.
This certification will be accepted as one form of evidence for your principal residence address."
The Nevada DMV-005 Certificate of Nevada Residency is a self-certification that also satisfies the requirement and is filled out and signed in the DMV office.

Why Laughlin, Nevada?

My initial reason was to travel the shortest distance and Laughlin, Nevada is the closest DMV from the south. The most widely suggested location is Pahrump DMV,
but Pahrump is another 149 miles or 2 hours and 22 minutes further into Nevada.

River Fund, Inc. is a local non-profit agency providing direct emergency and crisis services for individuals and families

Colorado River Food Bank is no longer able to fill out the form because they were overwhelmed by the response from the CheapRVLiving video.

    1. David, I heard you mention you have cats and a dog in your video with Bob. I'd like to see how you travel with them and "have doors to keep from letting the cats out". That will be something I need in the future as I'm not on the road yet. I'm still in the process of researching and planning an RV life. Thanks for the great information.

    2. I'm moving this to my new giddy-up and go blog.
Where I will address how I've dealt with day to day living while living on the road for the last year.

    1. That's ironic, I bought a Nissan NV tall van so I don't have to deal with towing.

    1. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Not having that situation I'm only going by memory. I seem to remember that you have to provide documentation of every name that you have used.
